[Roland Penrose]
'Sometimes, almost never, by chance of invitation arrives to explore distant countries with a girl with whom one is in love and, should this occur, one would be an obstinate fool to refuse.'
Roland Penrose had first met Lee Miller in 1937. The following Summer they embarked on a trip around the Balkans together, taking in the sights of Greece, Bulgaria, and Romania. To preserve this happy time (before the outbreak of the Second World War) Penrose created a 'visual diary' for Miller. He combined his photographs with poetic commentary and surrealist layout, and published the scrapbook in an edition of 500 copies. The cover was designed by Hans Bellmer. This second edition, with an afterword by Penrose, was published to coincide with an exhibition on the artist.
