Oliver Messel (1904-1978) was a successful English stage designer, creating set and costume designs for plays, operas, ballets and films. He was also known for his paintings and interior designers. A key rare book on Messel is Oliver Messel. Stage Designs and Costumes (1933). He also illustrated several titles including Romeo and Juliet (1936) and Lady Sysonby's Cook Book (1935). Messel's life and designs have been examined in several monographs and catalogues.
