Beaton created scrapbooks throughout his life, juxtaposing his own photographs and drawings with cuttings from newspapers, magazines and theatre programmes. The books were a repository for his visual inspiration and imagination and for readers today they offer a unique insight into his creative process. The Art of the Scrapbook reproduces hundreds of double-page spreads from the scrapbooks, many for the first-time. The size of the book duplicates the scale of the original albums.
