[Cecil Beaton]

The sale catalogue for the auction of the contents of Cecil Beaton's home, Reddish House in Broadchalke Wiltshire. If Ashcombe was Beaton's youthful arcaida, Reddish was his grown-up retreat. He spent much time there writing, resting, painting, entertaining and tending the garden. Followed Beaton's death earlier in 1980, the contents of the house were put up for sale by Christie's. The two day auction was immensely popular with many looking to obtain a souvenir of Beaton's creative life. Items included furniture, decorative objects, hats, garden ornaments and artwork, including pieces by Bérard, Carrington, Cocteau, Hockney, Augustus and Gwen John, Picasso, Francis Rose, Sutherland, Tchelithew, Christopher Wood, Diego and Alberto Giacometti, and Rex Whistler. Greta Garbo's preserved rose is also offered. The catalogue is well illustrated and includes photographs of the interiors in situ.
