A scarce portfolio of photographs by the fashion and sports photographer Toni Frissell (1907-1988), complete with 10 plates. Frissell was an important American photographer, working in the mid-20th Century. She worked as a fashion photographer for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar in the 1930s and 1940s and was one of the earliest photographers to take the models outside of the studio and into the open air. Later she moved into sports photography, revelling in capturing the vitality and wholesomeness of the American woman. These interests are embodied in the photographs she took for the Sun Valley portfolio. The portfolio and images were commissioned by the Union Pacific Railroad Company and the Sun Valley holiday resort in Idaho. The aim was to promote Sun Valley as the perfect destination for the winter season - 'Winter Sports under a Summer Sun'. Six of Frissell's photographs are of skiing; the other four capture swimming, bowling, ice-skating and apres-ski . Complete sets of the portfolio are scarce as the plates were often removed for framing.
